Learn Series Cares about Your Health.

I set out to my local blood bank to donate blood. If you have ever given blood before, you know one of the first things they do is take your blood pressure. Well my blood pressure was so high the blood bank wouldn't even allow me to give blood. I immediately called up my general practitioner and was able to get in to see him that day.

I just assumed he was going to increase my blood pressure medication and everything was going to be okay. Guess what? Instead of giving me more medication, he told me to lose some weight, ten pounds to be exact. I bargained with him a little and we agreed that in the next 3 months I was to lose 8 pounds. Unfortunately, I had a big problem I still had 3 containers full of Christmas cookies to finish. So, I didn't start to lose weight for about 5 weeks, until the cookies were complete.

Well, I started a little dieting, a little exercising and reduced the number of candy bars I was eating and lost some weight. I was able to shed more than the agreed upon 8 pounds, more than 10 pounds, I lost a lot of weight. In this section of the YouCanLearnSeries website, we will discuss the things I did to lose weight and I will even tell you how much I lost. But, the losing the weight story is more than reducing food intake or increasing exercise, it was a change in my mindset. A change you can make in your life, if you want to make that kind of change. When I was in my late twenties, I would play basketball with the neighborhood boys and we would talk sports, cars and running. One boy came by my house one day and we talked for over an hour on his desire to be a better runner on his high school cross country team. Something we talked about inspired him to excel and he ran times faster than ever before. But just before the big conference race he came to me and I let him down. I had an opportunity to inspire him, to lift him up to the success he dreamed of, but I failed. We will discuss what I said right and what I didn't do to help this youngster achieve his goals.
Like this young man you have great ability inside you. Let's take a journey together over the next few months and see if you can achieve your "Great Expectation". I believe you can. The Beauty and Greatness of the Rose by Antonia Bailey

Beauty and Greatness of the Roses .

Of hundreds of thousands of flowers that exist in the world, the one most common flower that most people can recognize and identify is the rose. The rose
has been used for hundreds of years to express a varying number of emotions, as a pleasing fragrance in perfumes or potpourri, to consumables, and even has
uses for security.
In general the rose is pleasing to the sight and smell as they are graceful and have a pleasing aroma. But as they say every rose has its thorn and with
this rose bushes have been planted as an outer defense under windows and drainpipes to discourage intruders of all forms from entering the premises. And
because of the aesthetic qualities that the rose possesses it has been a favored alternative to walls and fences.
A part of the rose known as the rose hip also has been used to make tea, jam, bread and many other consumables. The rose hip is high in vitamin C and
carries vitamin A, D, E in addition to the essential fatty acids, antioxidants and iron making it a very popular substance to people who seek and promote a
healthy lifestyle.
The most common method that most people affiliate the rose with is the conveying of emotions and expressions. In floriography, the language of flowers, the
rose has many different meanings depending on the color. The crimson rose has always associated itself with the emotion of love and therefore has been a
favorite among couples especially on the fourteenth of February.
Also in relation to the red rose being simultaneous with love, the amount of roses can also define the meaning. A dozen roses meaning "dozens of ways I love
you", two dozen standing for "loving you for each and every hour of the day", three dozen convey the feelings of love unlike any other and four dozens
usually mean unconditional love. The red rose can also mean courage and respect though these two traits are less commonly known by the general public.
Other commonly known colors of the rose are white, yellow, pink, burgundy and blue. The white rose usually represents purity, innocence and virtue. Because
of the white color it has been a favorite as a decorative centerpiece in homes and offices. The yellow rose is known for the meaning of friendship but can
also mean jealousy and infidelity. The pink rose symbolized grace, sophistication and elegance which were traits sought by many young women in the Victorian
period and even today. The burgundy rose has been a favorite with among more mature women as its meaning is beauty.
The blue rose was originally non existent and was usually a white rose that had been dyed blue. But with hybrid breeding and genetic engineering the blue
rose was created. The blue rose represents the feeling of mystery, attaining the impossible as they never existed in the past. Along with this sense is the
true black rose does not currently exist. The so-called black rose is actually a very dark red that seems black. The black rose has been associated with
death and hatred but can also mean a variety of other emotions and expressions such as farewell, rejuvenation and rebirth.I Never Promised You A Rose Garden

Is Marijuana the Secret Ingredient of Truly Innovative Food?

When I was young, and in relatively close proximity to those who indulged in the smoking of marijuana, I came across a lot of entertainingly odd behavior and just as much entertainingly odd food. My recollections from those days involved dear friends who, upon smoking out, had lost all inhibition and gained a capricious and irrational hunger. There were the apple and cheddar microwave quesadillas topped with Trader Joe’s guacamole. There was the mac n’ cheese mixed with canned tuna and capers served along with an ice-cold can of Budweiser. And then there were the breakfast cookies made with oatmeal and bacon (those were actually kind of good and strangely addictive). Like it or not, smoking pot seemed to serve as a sort of munchies-inducing muse for demented home chefs with a few spare ingredients within easy reach.
Remembering these moments, I was deeply entertained by a recent story in the New York Times titled “Marijuana Fuels a New Kitchen Culture.” The piece contends that marijuana is inspiring chefs and restaurants to create a new kind of cuisine, and utilizing snack-sized interviews with a few chefs who are “unabashedly open about marijuana’s role in their creative and recreational lives and its effect on their restaurants.” Now to be clear the article is not about how chefs cook with marijuana or even cook while under the influence, this is more about how the after-hours indulgence plays muse to the already innovative and creative mind of the chef. It inspires creativity and stimulates the appetite for a certain kind of food experience (i.e. munchies-friendly grub).
Now I had a few problems with this article for many reasons, and not because I take issue with chefs who wake and bake (so to speak). Largely this was billed as a trend piece about how marijuana is now informing and influencing our dining and menu options, which to me this is hardly a trend. I won’t be so presumptuous as to say that all chefs and restaurant workers smoke pot, but I will say that the vast majority have been at it for a while and the idea of altered states of consciousness influencing art, food, and creation for that matter is hardly a new one. If anything, this is a standard practice, not an emerging trend.
Journalistic issues aside, the piece moved me to reflect on how elusive and mysterious true creativity can be, as well as the differences between a truly good idea and the forgettable musings of a stoner–especially relative to food. There is no arguing that marijuana is both stimulating to the appetite as well as the brain, but does this stimulation really amount to creativity? Isn’t it true that creative people are generally creative when buzzed on pot or tipsy, whereas noncreative people are generally noncreative when buzzed on pot or tipsy, but hold onto the illusion that peanut butter sushi is a good idea?
What do you think? Does marijuana (or any substance that produces an altered state of consciousness) really

stimulate creativity in the kitchen…or elsewhere? Have you had personal experience along these lines? Care to share a recipes.  Raw Nirvana - Uncooked Food Recipes

The Beauty of Bridal Rose Bouquets . By Matt Murren

There is nothing quite as spectacular as roses and rose bouquets are even more beautiful. They are something that is never forgotten and signify how just how wonderful a person is. Receiving a bouquet of roses makes one's day - there is nothing quite as satisfying as getting a bouquet for a birthday, anniversary, wedding or any other special occasion. They are not only beautiful to look at, they have a wonderful fragrance that lasts and lasts.
Brides throughout the world most often choose roses to go in their bridal bouquets. Because roses are so readily available, brides are able to almost always get any rose they want. Roses come in a whole spectrum of colors (except for blue or black!) Most of the time, their thorns are removed before the bouquet is even put together for the bride. This prevents any type of injury during the wedding or at the reception when the bouquet is thrown.
The most common types of roses used in wedding bouquets are Avant-garde, Aqua, Sweet Akito, Bianca and Balck Baccara. These types come in many colors and each color has its own special meaning. For example, red traditionally signifies long-lasting love and romance. White Roses mean purity and a new beginning. Yellow roses depict friendship and emit a bright, cheery feeling. Pink means appreciation and is often used as an expression of sympathy. Lavender roses are enchanting and often are used by brides who fell in love at first sight. Many brides choose a combination of red and white roses to use in their bouquets because these roses together signify togetherness.
The style of bouquet that a bride chooses can be completely customized to include anything she wants. However, the most common designs are cone bouquets (which often feature two-toned roses with trailing pearls), composite bouquets (which contain roses and trailing moss, spring bouquets), spring bouquets (containing roses and other flowers), round bouquets (which contain not only flowers but leaves and berries) and teardrop bouquets (which resembles a teardrop and has a combination of roses and leafy greens.) In any case, a bride is sure to find just what she wants when she starts looking at the huge selection of rose bouquets that are available.

8 Reasons to Drink Coffee by Melissa Breyer

According to new research, the potential benefits of caffeine for maintenance of proper brain functioning has only recently begun to be appreciated. Proper brain functioning? Those of us who stumble blindly, mumbling unintelligibly,  from bed to coffee pot first thing in the morning already appreciate the effect of caffeine on proper brain functioning–but the benefits now seem to be further-reaching than the need to shake off the morning cobwebs.
In a study just published in a special supplement to the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, researchers explored the potential benefits of caffeine and found substantial evidence that it may be protective against the cognitive decline seen in dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
For the study (“Therapeutic Opportunities for Caffeine in Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Neurodegenerative Diseases”) a group of international experts looked into the effects of caffeine on the brain. The result was a collection of original studies
exploring  a number of  topics ranging from molecular targets of caffeine, neurophysiological modifications and adaptations, to the potential mechanisms underlying the behavioral and protective actions of caffeine in distinct brain
pathologies. Here’s a brief summary of what they found:

1. Caffeine has a positive effect on cognition, memory performance, and the ability to complete complex tasks.
2. An inverse association between regular caffeine consumption and the incidence of Parkinson’s disease was found–in other words, caffeine looks to be protective against Parkinson’s disease.
3 . The consumption of moderate amounts of caffeine was seen to decrease the cognitive decline associated with aging, as well as the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease.
4. Caffeine prevented motor deficits, normalized brain function, and prevented brain degeneration.

Other studies have shown:

5. Caffeine improves a sense of well-being, happiness, energy, alertness and sociability.
6. Caffeine  enhances aerobic endurance.
7. Consumption of coffee can lead to a decreased risk of Type 2 diabetes.
8. Coffee has a whopping amount of antioxidants–on average, Americans receive 1,299 milligrams of antioxidants  from their 1.64 cups of daily coffee. The closest competitor was tea at 294 milligrams. Rounding out the top five sources were bananas, 76 milligrams; dry beans, 72 milligrams; and corn, 48 milligrams.
Next: Coffee cons? And how to make it green.

Concerns about coffee?

Some of the concerns about coffee include heart disease hypertension, cancer, and leaching of calcium. A New York Times’ article in 2008 debunked many of these myths and found this: an analysis of 10 studies of more than 400,000 people found no increase in heart disease among daily coffee drinkers, whether their coffee came with caffeine or not. A study of 155,000 nurses, women who drank coffee with or without caffeine for a decade were no more likely to develop hypertension than non-coffee drinkers. An international review of 66 studies last year, scientists found coffee drinking had little if any effect on the risk of developing pancreatic or kidney cancer. Coffee and tea drinkers who consume the currently recommended amount of calcium need not worry about caffeine’s effect on their bones. (And of course, if you have concerns about coffee,  be sure to check with your doctor.)

How to Brew the Greatest Greenest Cup
Coffee enthusiasts swear by the press pot, aka the French Press, popularized in the United States by Bodum. Press pot brewing retains more of coffee’s flavor and essential oils that might otherwise be filtered out by a paper filter. In terms of energy efficiency, the manual press pot requires only the energy to heat the water (an electric kettle is most efficient). Americans spend $400 million annually on electricity for their coffeemakers–press pots, virtually nothing. For a detailed tutorial on how to brew the best press pot coffee, let the The Coffee Geek show you how.
When selecting your coffee, opt for Fair Trade, organic, or shade grown–coffees farmed with these farmer and planet-friendly systems are becoming increasingly available in the mainstream marketplaceMelitta One:One Java Pods, Vanilla Haze Coffee, 18-Count Pods (Pack of 4)

Are You Drinking Contaminated Tap Water?

If you are concerned about contaminated tap water, you are certainly not alone. It is an issue that everyone should be concerned about. Are you drinking contaminated water?
There are a couple of ways to found what types of contaminants are present in your supply and in your home. If you are serviced by a public treatment facility in the US, they are required to publish a quality report, sometimes referred to as a Customer Confidence Report, on an annual basis. The reports do not always inspire confidence.
If you have a private well or have older pipes, it is sometimes a good idea to have a sample tested. In homes with older pipes, there are sometimes traces of lead that would not show up on the quality report, because they are not present at the facility.
Many Kinds of Contaminants
There are hundreds of different contaminants that could be present in a private well. Testing for all of them is expensive. Sometimes, you can get information from your local government offices concerning which contaminants to test for. That can reduce the cost of testing.
A simple litmus paper test will reveal one type of contaminated tap water. If chlorine is present, the paper will change colors. The test strips are very inexpensive, used primarily for testing the amount of chlorine in pools. They are available at any hardware store. So, if you are curious, you could buy some.
There are some contaminants that can only be tested for by an independent laboratory. Facilities do not test for them on a regular basis, if at all. Cysts are one example.
Waterborne Illnesses
Cryptosporidium and giardia cysts are a cause of waterborne illnesses, with symptoms similar to those of any kind of intestinal virus; vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, etc. Treatment facilities do not normally test for cryptosporidium contaminated tap water, unless they suspect there is a problem.
Independent laboratories can test a sample, but this is one type of contamination that can change greatly, in a very short period of time. There might be no cysts today, but thousands tomorrow. They are basically the egg-form of parasites.
Parasites
When the parasites release the cysts, they float around until they find a host. They are very hardy, immune to chemicals such as chlorine. The only practical protection from them is a sub-micron filtration system. Many of the better home purifiers include this step.
Perchlorate
Facilities never test for perchlorate contaminated tap water, unless they are required to do so. Independent testing has found high levels of the chemical in hundreds of different supplies around the US.
It takes a good dual stage home purification system to effectively remove perchlorate. The risk of exposure varies, depending on a person's age. But, it can increase a person's risk of cancer, as can many of the other chemicals found in publicly treated supplies.
What Should You Do?
It is safe to assume that there is some degree of contaminants present in all of the homes in the US and probably throughout the world. Buying a good home purifier is actually less expensive than testing for contaminated tap water. The logical step is to buy one.
And now please visit the CleanWaterPure website listed below for updated information on how to remove contaminated water from your home.Water: The Epic Struggle for Wealth, Power, and Civilization

Walking For Health - Reduce Stress Naturally

Walking for health is a great way to reduce stress naturally. Most people today are familiar with what stress and anxiety feels like. When the body is stressed, it releases hormones that prepare you for a fight or flight response. As a result, your body gears up to deal with the stressor by quickening your pulse, raising your blood pressure, shortening your breath and clenching muscles.

While the flight or fight reaction may be helpful in dealing with certain stressful situations, in many instances there is to much pent up energy and few ways to release it. For instance, as you encounter traffic on your way to work you may feel anger or stress when another car cuts you off or traffic is backed up. But rarely do you have the opportunity to express the anger and stress that you feel. You sit in the car your stress levels building. As a result of being inhibited, these stress responses may do serious damage to the body in the long run, translating into high blood pressure, ulcers, headaches, depression, anxiety, and a host of other ailments.

Walking is an excellent way of releasing this energy. Walking for health leads to reduced stress and has a host of other benefits. When one walks, the cardiovascular system in the body; the part of the body that is responsible for distributing oxygen and circulating blood to all organs works better. Regular walking for health promotes better heart functioning and leads to a reduction in heart conditions like stroke, high blood pressure and build-up of bad cholesterol.

Over time and with regular walking for health, your body slowly starts converting fat into muscle, giving you a leaner, fitter body and reduced body weight (provided its combined with the right diet); your flexibility improves, and bone density improves which results in a reduced risk of osteoporosis. There is also evidence which shows that walking aids better digestion, reduces the risk of colon cancer and helps keep insulin in check.

Apart from this, endorphins, or happy hormones get released into your blood stream when you are walking for health. This gives you an elevated feeling of well-being.  Bone Strength Take Care 120 tabs

Reasons to Drink More Water

Soaking in healing hot springs, sprinkling water in a spiritual ceremony, finding inner calm by listening to the rain on your roof and breathing the moist rainy-day air. What do all of these things have in common?

Water.

More than half of a human body is made up of water. We need water to survive. So it’s not surprising that drinking lots of clean water is one of the simplest ways to help ensure good health.

Here are just a few of the benefits:

1. Without enough water, the liver can’t do its job well. And its job, as you know, is to detox the whole body—a pretty important task in these modern times.

2. Feeling kind of puffy? Drink more water! It can help to ease the fluid retention and bloating associated with premenstrual syndrome.

3. Trying to drop a few pounds? Drink water. It naturally suppresses the appetite and helps the body metabolize fat.

4. Drinking lots of water can prevent leg cramps that happen due to mild dehydration in warmer weather.

5. Drinking lots of water can also help prevent chronic dehydration.

If you do get mildly dehydrated, don’t try to drink a gallon of water in three minutes. (Unless you’re trying out for some Book of World Records!) The safest way to rehydrate is to drink small amounts of water frequently. And while you’re at it, enjoy a banana between sips, since they’re loaded with potassium and can re-establish electrolyte balance.

It’s important to keep in mind that it is possible to drink too much water. A good rule of thumb is to drink between six to eight glasses per day. Don’t assume that any liquid you drink counts toward your eight glasses, since some sugary or caffeinated drinks can actually deplete your body of water.

Maintaining Healthy Cholesterol Levels May Lower Risk of Prostate Cancer

Men who keep their cholesterol levels in check may decrease their chances of developing prostate cancer, in addition to keeping their heart healthy, as science has already shown. In fact, two recent studies indicate that maintaining healthy levels of cholesterol may be a good form of cancer prevention.

In one study, results showed that men who retained healthy levels of cholesterol in the range below 200 actually cut their risk of developing high-risk prostate tumors by more than 50 percent in comparison to men with high ranging cholesterol levels. In the second study, findings showed that men with high levels of good (HDL) cholesterol were slightly less likely to develop prostate cancer in any form, compared to men with very low HDL cholesterol levels.

The studies were recently published in the journal of the American Association for Cancer Research called Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers & Prevention. Both studies support prior research indicating that by limiting fats in the bloodstream, the risk of cancer can be lowered.

According to Elizabeth Platz of Johns Hopkins University who led the first study, “There might be this added benefit to keeping cholesterol low.” For the study, Platz’s team analyzed data of 5,586 men aged 55 and older that came from the Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial conducted back in the 1990s. All of these men had been a part of the placebo group during the trial.

Among the group, a total of 60 of the men developed high-risk, aggressive tumors that are known to grow and spread quickly. By comparing cholesterol levels of all the men in the group, it was revealed that those men with cholesterol levels under 200 had a 59 percent less chance of developing one of these high-risk tumors than those men having high levels of cholesterol.

Platz acknowledged that cholesterol levels had no significant effect on the overall incidence of prostate cancer in the study. However, she pointed out that the association between low cholesterol levels and a reduced incidence of aggressive disease “is a notable reduction which is not often seen for prostate cancer.”

Although the decrease in risk is highly significant, it must be noted that the researchers could not account for the number of men in the study who were taking cholesterol-lowering medications such as statin drugs, which include such name brands as Lipitor, Zocor, and Crestor. Therefore, some of the reduction in risk may have been due to the use of such drugs rather than from generally having low cholesterol levels.

The results of the second study are based on data gathered over 18 years from following more than 29,000 Finnish men who were taking various vitamins and nutrients to test whether or not they could lower their risk for cancer. All of the participants in the study were smokers. According to study leader Dr. Demetrius Albanes of the National Cancer Institute, findings showed that those men having the highest levels of HDL cholesterol were 11 percent less likely to develop prostate cancer than those with lowest levels.

In a statement, Albanes said, “Our study affirms that lower total cholesterol may be caused by undiagnosed cancer.” He then added, “In terms of a public health message, we found that higher levels of good cholesterol seem to be protective for all cancers.”

Researchers from both studies agree that further research is necessary to confirm findings, as well as to identify the molecular mechanisms behind the association.

In the United States, prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men. It is estimated that over 192,000 new cases will develop this year alone, and of those, the disease will claim 27,360 lives.

It does limit saturated fats and focuses on fruits, vegetables, soups, pastas, and oatmeal so there are some nutritional benefits just make sure you get enough calcium in your meals.
7 Volumetrics is similar to the Pritkin Principle and encourages you to eat plenty of produce. Your fat intake is limited but this diet is respectfully healthy and suggests against crackers and cookies. It is a lower calorie plan.
8 The Zone is a healthier option to Atkins because it recommends lean meats and proteins but tends to run low on suggestions for calcium.
